Login Windows Remote Desktop in a secure way by USB key

Rohos Logon Key 2-FA software  secures your Terminal Server and allows logging in into Remote Desktop by using a password + hardware USB token.

Rohos Logon Key supports a variety of authentication devices
including OTP technology and offers flexible 2-factor authentication
control.

How it works

Rohos Logon Key
integrates into Windows Terminal Services login screen. It works by adding two-factor authentication level to existing authentication infrastructure. After applying 2-FA policy users can log into Remote Desktop session only by using an additional security device.

Remote Desktop access control benefits:

  • Allows applying 2-factor authentication by user list or AD user group or only for Remote Desktop users.
  • User must provide USB token each time for login
  • Each generated Key is unique and cannot be duplicated by the user.
  • USB Key can be configured on Terminal Server via Remote Desktop or on local Admin PC.
  • You don’t need to install Rohos on a client PC/device you log in from.
  • You can use PKCS#11 tokens of different vendors at the same time.

Higher security level with two-factor authentication variety:

Read next to find out how to configure it.

How does Rohos Disk differ from the similar disk encryption software?

Summary: There are about a dozen similar disk encryption programs on the web, even free. But the Rohos Disk program offers a few unique and really useful features and tools.

One step to create an encrypted disk

Unique feature: After the program has been installed, Rohos Wizard is analyzing the configuration of the computer and selecting the size of the disk and the other properties that will fit your system. All you need to do in order to start the Rohos disk encryption is just to set the disk access password and click Create disk.

The other programs lead the user through all possible settings, making them wonder what option to choose. It sometimes causes difficulties because there is no default value. You can’t just press Next. You will unavoidably have to specify:

  • Disk size
  • A path for disk image storing
  • Disk password

Some disk encryption software also requires specifying Encryption (ciphering) algorithm, type of the file system for the virtual disk, and the other things.

One step to Hide folder

You may keep your folders or Internet applications’ data secure so anyone else won’t have the ability to access them and explore your privacy anymore.

An application profile folder will be physically moved into an encrypted Rohos disk by just selecting the one you wish to hide/password protect in the Hide folder window.

Then it will be replaced with a shortcut. This will allow the folder to get opened and the application to work.

Security benefits with the “Hide Folder” feature

  • Allows encrypting any folder on the computer like My Documents, My Pictures, etc.
  • Encrypt and protect Google Chrome profile: history, favorites, form data, credit card number, saved passwords, cookies, etc.
  • Password protects any Application folder within C:\Program Files\
  • Encrypt and hide your Skype profile with chat history, received files, contacts, Skype password
  • Encrypt Mozilla Firefox and Opera profiles.
  • Save your confidential files on the virtual disk

One Favorite secret disk for quick access

Unique feature: The Favorite disk can be quickly connected and disconnected by pressing one button. It is very easy and convenient. The User should make minimal effort to start working with the confidential data!

All the similar programs let the user create several virtual encrypted disks. Actually, it’s convenient you have 2 or 3 disks for different purposes. But in fact, 90% of users create just one encrypted disk. But each time they need to specify which one to mount/open to work with it.

Note: The Rohos Disk program is originally intended for working with only one disk. At the same time, there is a possibility to create additional encrypted partitions. They can be connected by means of a shortcut or by specifying the path to the disk image. This option was created for advanced users.

Disk icon is in each application including MS Office!

Unique feature: The Rohos secure disk icon is now available via:

  • Save/Open dialogue windows in all Windows applications
  • The Send… context menu in Explorer
  • MS Office applications Save as/Open dialogue window

An example:

Encrypted disk icon

No one similar program offers this feature.

Turn-On Notifications

When you turn on/ off the secret disk, you may see the notifications from Rohos Disk in the clock area they show that your personal disk appears in the system by your instructions, and becomes inaccessible (disappears) at the end of the computer run.

Your Autonomous secret disk

Unique feature: If you set up USB Key as an access key for Rohos Disk then you don’t need to manually enter the disk password at the beginning and close the disk when you shut down the computer or log off. All are done automatically when you insert a USB Key into the computer and close Windows.

With any similar software, you will need to enter the password each time you want to work with the secret disk. And to keep in mind when it’s time to close it.

Built-in File-shredder

Rohos Disk contains a File-shredder, which moves your files and folders to your secret Rohos disk. After the files are moved they’re erased by the File-shredder and deleted.

Portable security

Unique feature: Rohos Disk program is able to protect a part of your USB flash drive or portable USB hard-drive. You can open and edit data on your encrypted secret partition on any computer without administrative rights on a guest PC!

Additional Rohos Disk tools:

Many similar disk encryption software lacks the useful tools as we have in Rohos Disk:

  • Ability to verify Encrypted Partition for disk errors.
  • Disk resize. Low free space? Just increase encrypted partition.
  • Data Steganography – disk encrypted data may be kept in AVI, MP3, or any other media file.
  • The disk image file may be protected from deletion.
  • Password recovery file which prevents the forgotten password of the Rohos disk.
  • Have a USB Key to access one or many secured Rohos volumes. As a key, you may use any USB flash drive, YubiKey OTP token, Aladdin eToken, Swekey, and other USB dongles.

Rohos Disk Encryption

Virtual encrypted disk inside-out

Applies to:  Rohos Disk Encryption software.

Summary: There are a many encryption tools available on the Internet. Some of them work by encrypting file-by-file, some of them make encrypted disk containers. Almost all of the tools use modern encryption algorithms, like AES with 256 bit key length (Blowfish or Serpent), and it’s almost impossible to crack such cryptographic protection.

Rohos Disk Encryption creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file (container) and mounts it as a real disk.

It means you don’t have to do anything to encrypt a file or folder. Rohos encrypts/decrypts  files automatically when you saving or reading them from the disk. All you need to do is to activate encryption using the password or USB token before you start working. The encrypted disk letter will be available  in the My Computer, and you can start working.

Encrypted disk

You may ask us where the encrypted disk comes from and what it comes to when you stop working with it. In fact there is no any disk as such in the system, only its file-container is created. You may see it after you have turned it on.  Actually, its contents are stored in its container-file (i.e. in the big file of the same size as your disk)

Rohos disk in File Explorer

You can work with it as with a usual disk – to create new files and to delete the old ones, to work with files and save them, and the data is being encrypted automatically (on-the-fly). When you stop working with the files and log off, the disk becomes invisible, and the information in it is inaccessible, i.e. no one can see it, find it via search in Internet or change.

The programs that create the virtual CD-ROM disks work on the same principle. They create the virtual CD-ROM device

You may be curious about the place virtual disk appears from at the beginning of work and disappears to when work is finished. There is no really any physical disk in your computer, just its container-file. This file is a kind of special file as big as your encrypted disk. When you enter your password this container is mounted (connected) as a virtual disk. When you disconnect virtual disk, its letter gets removed from “My Computer” and no one can see information or find it using Windows search feature and of course, information can’t be changed if it is stored on encrypted disk!

Virtual CD-ROM tools and Rohos Disk tool  are based on the same principle. Special system driver is used to create virtual disk  drive, which works like physical one, but container file (like ISO) is used instead of physical CD-ROM disk.

How does Rohos program work?

Due to flexibility of OS Windows it’s possible to create any virtual device. It’s called virtual device creating.

For instance, there is a program named VmWare, which can create virtual computer inside Windows. You can launch another copy of Windows in VmWare window and work there as you usually do. Neither installed programs, nor even Windows will detect the change.

Rohos Disk creates virtual disk drive and the disk letter is  visible in “My Computer”. If you want there can be several  virtual drives.

Rohos Disk “tells” Windows about new virtual device being ON, when you turn on the encrypted virtual disk by typing in the correct password.

Further you can use virtual disk as if it is a physical one. Rohos Disk turns off the virtual disk and informs Windows that there is no such device when you log off Windows or turn off your computer.

Rohos Virtual encrypted disk technology.

On-the-fly data encryption

Windows transfers to Rohos Disk program all the data you have saved on virtual disk. Rohos Disk encrypts these data automatically and records it on disk container. This kind of encryption is called on-the-fly encryption. It means that data written to physical disk (where the virtual disk is stored) are already encrypted.

Rohos Disk uses the most popular high-speed encryption algorithms (for example AES) that allow real-time data encryption and decryption.

Access your partition with a password

Create a new partition with Rohos Mini Drive Portable

Protecting your USB drive by a password

Rohos Disk or Rohos Mini Drive tools are specially designed to password-protect a portion of a USB flash drive or portable HDD, by creating a virtual encrypted partition. The partition is protected by a password and can be opened on any computer. Now, even if you are in an internet café and have no administrative rights, you can still have full access to your secret partition with the help of the Rohos Disk Browser utility. This means that you can open any file, read, and edit any data. Naturally, when you are at your home or office computer, you will still be able to work with your encrypted partition as usual.

On a guest computer, you may always open your protected partition on the USB flash drive in “read-write” mode for FAT/FAT32 and NTFS formats with the help of the Rohos Disk Browser utility. This makes it possible to open or copy only one particular file or directory, without granting access to every file.

How Rohos Disk Browser works

  1. With the help of Rohos Disk or Rohos Mini Drive, you create a secure partition on a USB drive. After this “Rohos Disk Browser” and “Rohos Mini” files will be copied into a USB flash drive.
  2. When you click on Rohos Mini.exe from the USB drive, you will need to enter your password to open the secret partition:
  3. If you have Administrative rights, you can open the disk as a virtual drive, Alternatively, you can open the Rohos Disk Browser utility, and open the encrypted disk in a simpler manner (user mode encryption).
  4. If you do not have Administrative rights (for example when you are in an internet café), Rohos Disk Browser will automatically be started. This will open the encrypted partition. You will be able to open documents and run applications*.

After you enter your password for the encrypted disk, a tree of files and directories from the secret disk will appear in the window:

  • Double-clicking on a document in Rohos Disk Browser, it searches for an associated application and opens it (with user-mode on-the-fly encryption).
  • The ‘save’ function can be used to copy one or many files or directories from Rohos Disk Browser into any other directory.
  • Virtual Folder command – open a special window where you can see all the files from the current folder in thumbnail view.

You can open Disk Browser from the menu Start ->Programs->Rohos->Disk Browser (make sure Rohos Disk or Rohos Mini Drive program is installed on your computer). Alternatively, you can start the program Rohos Mini.exe from the USB drive (make sure you have already created an encrypted partition).

How to configure a USB drive to create an encrypted partition on it

  1. In the main window of Rohos Disk or Rohos Mini Drive click on ‘Encrypt USB drive
  2. A dialog box will appear, showing you the size of the USB drive, the letter which will identify the newly-created partition, and the path to the files.
  3. Enter a password that will protect access to the encrypted disk
  4. Repeat the password
  5. Finally, click ‘Create Disk‘. In the same dialog, you can create a label that will identify the disk on the Desktop, by selecting the checkbox next to it.

Benefits of this approach:

  • Automatic creation and configuration of the USB key, and the size of the secret partition (disk), which it is possible to create on the USB drive. If the size of the partition were incorrect, then it would be necessary to “format” the USB drive beforehand.
  • There is no need to install a program on the computer where you will open your secret partition. The program itself is installed on the USB drive. There is no need to copy the program and driver onto the USB drive or to create an autorun.info file.
  • Simply running Rohos mini.exe from the “root” of the USB drive enables you to open your secret partition. You can open your encrypted partition on any computer, even if you do not have Administrative rights.

* Note: Most applications, especially portable work on Rohos Mini Drive Browser. We have tested text files (extension txt, doc, etc.), media files (music/video), photos, and pictures. Meanwhile, some applications are not working properly.

Rohos Logon Key – Protect your computer from unauthorized access with a USB flash drive
There is more than one way to protect a computer, but there is also more than one way to break into it. A password can be cracked, overheard or figured out. If you protect your computer with something physical, which you can carry around with you, no one will be able to use your computer, no matter how skilled he may be. With Rohos Logon Key, you can convert a standard USB flash drive into a security token for your computer. When you start your computer, you will not be able to log in, unless you plug in the flash drive.

“…Thank you VERY much for  a simple, intuitive product!  I will be recommending Rohos to my clients.” (about Rohos Logon Key for Mac)

by Mr John A. Fensom, 2009

Comments:

Why? I find Rohos Logon Key so useful.

1st]  Most important to me is simple and clear instructions of use. (Contained within the programme or it’s help file.)

2nd] Simplicity of use, THIS IS PROBABLY THE EASIEST USB key program for logging on, that I have EVER tried. This is exceptional for anyone who is disabled. For the following (Paragraph 2 sub-numbered) reasons.

2a} Users can create as complex a password (as they like) and then only ever need to use it ONLY once! Thereafter it can be stored away [and thus hidden from prying eyes, in your SAFE, or a metal Lock-up box, and only rarely IF EVER required. See 3 below.]

2b} For users who are disabled (such as myself) simply inserting the key then adding just a four digit code, logs you in in mere seconds rather than in taking ages or having to re-attempt ‘mistyped passwords’ several times or more! For myself who has serious problems with spinal nerve damage affecting the use of my hands, on the keyboard(s). ***** This is a SUPERB feature!

3rd] Ease of use and super security, along with the ability to recover things IFF (<- = if & only if) the user ever loses  their USB key.

I’ve been using computers for twenty-nine years and this is probably one of the best, (if NOT the BEST!) ever programme I have tested or used. It took me (a seriously disabled person) only three minutes to install reboot and use!

it works like a dream, just sit back and see the program do the login.

I think that is a very good idea! Keep me posted. We have some people here that login from their home using an ADSL-VPN connection, i was thinking of letting them use USB-keys to login as it is far better protection.

– completely different log on screen , but with usericon, etc.. – everything freely configurable
– alternative Logon with password possible (optional)
– configuration program mackte on my test computer rum (uses the MSIE for the interface)
– does not need to be really installed – simply to copy, exe start, to “Activte Rohos Welcome” click and already funktioniert’s – the return to the normal log in screen is just as simple
– are also here completely adjustable action with the separation of the USB stick (barriers, Ausloggen, state of rest, Runterfahren)
– 50% discount for student

Thus, now after the test I find Rohos Welcome best, because one can adapt the appearance there freely after its conceptions and it is also otherwise optically responding. Natural Login is also not bad, but the “Keyless time” and the missing possibility of being able to log in via normal username and password lets it fall in the valuation strongly. DiskLogon might which for purists be, which the Windows 2000-Design pleases. Kind of DEK Logon did not function with me.

The smartest, most feature-rich USB security login solution available

Review:

Pros: I have tried programs such as Dekart Login and Natural Login, but I have found the ideal solution in Rohos Welcome, which has the same functionality, but better implemented, and gives the user the flexibility they need to configure and personalize the application to suit their needs. For example, you can setup a custom wallpaper to appear whenever you remove the USB stick to lock your system, and add text based notices in various parts of the locked screen.

In Rohos, you have more options for what you would like to happen whenever the USB stick is removed, such as go into hibernation, which is not present in other solutions i’ve tried. This option is ideal for laptop users on the move who want to avoid the slow process of windows startup, whilst also saving battery life.

Rohos adds PIN security to your USB stick to stop anyone else logging in with it – yes, Dekart etc. has this, but Rohos uses a custom PIN entry keypad to let you enter the code with your mouse, rather than by keyboard, which bypasses any danger posed by any system compromised by hidden keylogging software. Even corporate windows 2-factor authentication solutions such as GemSafe GemPlus smartcard software do not offer this level of security with their PIN entry… thought has definitely gone into Rohos Welcome, and because of this, the program is more flexible, secure and stands above the competition.

For the best all-in-one USB security solution you should check out Rohos Desktop Security, which has all the features of Rohos Welcome, but also includes the ability to create secure, encrypted virtual disks, all integrated into the existing interface. You can buy similar products such as Dekart Private Disk, but once again Rohos has put the thought into their solution and offers excellent features such as steganography, where you can actually hide your virtual disk INSIDE another file, without altering the original files attributes so that you virtual disk is TOTALLY undetectable and only appears when you enter your USB stick!

Cons: I honestly cant think of any – I had an idea for one or two other features I would like to see in the program and mailed Rohos Support – I got a fast reply and they said they would happily look into my idea for future version, so I truly have NO complaints!

Experience a totally new way of logging onto Windows XP – using the revolutionary Rohos Welcome (version 1.2). Doubling up as a USB flash drive, automate the logon process with ease. Upon removal of the flash drive, you can configure Rohos Welcome to automatically logoff, shutdown, or hibernate the system.

Compatible with Windows 2000, Rohos Welcome changes the logon screen by following the Windows XP format. A nice touch was adding details such as the current date and time, logon time, and the addition/removal of users. This great piece of shareware is valid for a free 40-day trial period, where upon expiry, a small fee of $25/$45 (depending on the type of license) is required to keep it running. Compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and 2003 versions.

I work in a Fire Department Dispatch Centre and I pull my USB key out everytime I get a call…it’s great because it locks my system for the duration of a call, but when I come back and login with my USB key, I have several MSN messages because my MSN does not not change status with pulling the key. This would be a huge feature for me if you could swing it.

I love your program and now that I know the change is coming I intend on purchasing it.

I am running a new laptop computer Since this computer is a prime theft target, I have taken steps to make it as secure as possible when leaving it unsupervised. I keep it tethered. All my sensitive information (passwords, account numbers, etc.) is kept on a 1GB USB flash, including my Mozilla Firefox profile directory (contains autocomplete data and web page cache). I also run a file mirroring utility that mirrors critical files to my USB flash every hour, in case the drive crashes or the computer is stolen. Rohos adds security against computer tampering, since I pull the flash drive whenever I walk away from the computer.

  • Secure authentication in Windows XP/Vista/7/8
  • Replaces weak password based login with a hardware key
  • Allows to use big Windows password, without the need for remembering it
  • The system is password protected but you don’t need to enter it manually each time you log in or unlock Window.
  • Optional strong Two-factor authentication. Yubikey + your Windows password.
  • Login with YubiKey is fully automatic and fast!
  • Automatically locks your desktop when Yubikey is unplugged.
  • Cross-platform: Use a single YubiKey to log into Windows and Mac
  • Windows is protected even in Safe Mode
  • Secure login into Windows remote desktop by Windows 2008/2012
  • Supports any type of Yubikey and configurations: OTP/ HOTP, Offline or Online validation.

Windows logon with YubiKey

Allows to access Windows in a secure way by YubiKey replacing the regular password based login. All that the user should do is to insert YubiKey into the USB port and press it.

Rohos Logon Key is the only program that fully works with any Windows, Mac OS X and supports Windows remote desktop authentication by using YubiKey.

Setting-up YubiKey in Rohos Logon Key:

  • First you have to install Rohos Logon Key
  • In the main window open “Options” and choose YubiKey as USB Key device type for Rohos Logon:

  • In this dialog choose YubiKey in USB Key device type list.
  • Here, click “YubiKey options…” link to set up OTP validation method. Please note by default Rohos Logon does not validate OTP codes online on yubico.com .

Go back to main Rohos Logon window and click “Set up USB Key”:

After you enter your current user password > Click OK and Rohos Logon will ask you to touch YubiKey. Now you can use Yubikey for Windows login and desktop unlock.

For non-English users it’s important to know that during generating and typing YubiKey’s OTP the current system language is used. So make sure that during the Rohos Logon setup process and upon login the language that is used, e.g. Russian, German, Spanish, etc. remains the same. Otherwise the program displays the error: “The given USB key has not been configured for this computer”.

Yubikey security in Rohos:

Rohos Logon Key supports any model of YubiKey, including Neo model. Static or dynamic OTP mode and HOTP codes are supported.

  • During USB Key setup the program remembers YubiKey IDs (first 12 chars) and allows only these Ids for login.
  • OTP validation by a single AES key is also supported.
  • If you provides your Windows password during Yubikey setup – Rohos Logon saves it in encrypted form in Windows registry.
  • During accepting a string from YubiKey Rohos Logon allows only 4 sec to enter it, or it will deny it thinking that user enters it manually (Copy/Paste disabled also)
  • The program allows to set up 2 and more YubiKeys for login into the same PC
  • If you forget or lose YubiKey you can use Emergency Login

Setup Yubikey H-OTP for Windows login

Please read more in Google Authenticator support page.

Windows Remote Desktop authentication

Rohos Logon supports YubiKey OTP security and offers a flexible hardware based authentication for both Windows local login and Remote Desktop:

  • Supports both OTP verifications methods: local – by encryption OTP ( AES key should be provided) and remote – by validating OTP on any Yubikey enabled web site (according to Yubico validation API).
  • Remote Desktop Logon.

Setup Yubikey for strong two-factor authentication

    1. Open Rohos Logon Key > Options :
      – Check Login by USB Key only option
      – Check Require user to type Windows password along with a USB Key .
